Description

There’s nothing that beats warm, freshly made homemade apple fritters. These apple fritters are made with a cinnamon sugar batter, plenty of fresh, Honeycrisp apples and fried until golden brown. The apple fritters are dipped in a vanilla glaze, or you can choose to roll them in cinnamon sugar, for a delicious breakfast or brunch treat. You can make these the traditional way, by frying in oil, or you can make these in the air fryer.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 large apples, peeled and chopped (I used Honeycrisp)

Glaze

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, add flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Use a whisk to combine. Add in the eggs, milk and unsweetened applesauce. Stir to combine. Fold in the chopped apples until combined.

2. You can choose to fry these in oil, or make them in the air fryer.

To fry in oil: Add 2-3 inches of oil in a large pot. Heat the oil up to 350F.

To air fry: preheat air fryer to 400F.

3. To fry in oil: Drop the 2-3 apple fritters into the hot oil by roughly 1/3 cup measurements. I used my wooden spoon to scoop some of the batter up then dropped the spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. Be careful, as the oil is hot! You will have to use your finger or a rubber spatula to scrape off the wooden spoon or scrape out the measuring cup.
Fry the fritters for a couple minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Apple fritters are cooked through when the internal temperature reaches 165F. Remove the apple fritters with a slotted spoon and place on a wire cooling rack with paper towels lined underneath.

4. To air fry: Line the air fryer tray with parchment paper. Drop dollops of batter/dough onto the parchment paper. Air fry for 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip and air fry for a few minutes on the remaining side, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165F.

5. Allow the apple fritters to cool enough to handle, then make the icing. In a medium size shallow bowl, stir together the powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract until combined. Dip the top and if preferred flip and dip the bottom as well of the apple fritters. Allow the icing to harden for a couple minutes and enjoy!
