Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup apple cider
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line a 9×5 inch loaf pan with parchment paper. Spray with nonstick spray and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, add melted butter, eggs, brown sugar, apple cider and sour cream. Whisk to combine. Add in sifted flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, allspice and salt. Mix just until combined.

3. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.

4. Bake in preheated oven 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

5. Allow the bread to cool 10 minutes on a wire cooling rack, then remove the cake from the pan using the parchment paper to help pull the cake out of the pan. Allow the bread to cool an additional 10 minutes.

6. For the cinnamon sugar coating, in a medium bowl, stir together the sugar and cinnamon.

7. Brush the melted butter over the top and sides of the apple cider bread, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the top and sides of the bread.

8. Serve and enjoy!

  1. I enjoy your recipes and will make this bread this week. I have ask you if adding fresh apple is ok. Should I cook the apples first or just add fresh sliced apple. Also what apple can I use.
Thank you Jolene. Can’t wait to try this recipe.

    1. Hi Bing!

I can’t wait for you to try this one! It’s such a great fall bake. In terms of adding apple to the bread, yes you can definitely do that! I recommend peeling the apples and either adding diced apples, or grated. If you do diced apples, you could pour half the batter in the pan, add the diced apples, then pour the remaining batter on top, so you have a distinct apple layer. If you grate the apples, you can just add it directly in with the batter. But it’s up to you how you incorporate it.
I would recommend using a Honeycrisp apple. I like the balance of sweetness and tartness of these apples, and they hold their shape well when baked.
With the addition of the apples it could take a touch longer to bake. Just keep an eye on it and if the top is getting too dark, place a piece of tinfoil over top so that the top doesn’t get too dark.
      Happy baking!
