With Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, you know I’m thinking about all the delicious food! These garlic knots are one of those things I highly recommend adding to your menu. The knots are soft, extra fluffy and have plenty of delicious buttery garlic flavor. Of course, you don’t need a holiday to enjoy these rolls : ). They taste delicious on their own, or with your favorite cozy meal.
I love how simple these garlic knots are to make. They require one 60 minute rise before shaping them, then brushing them with the garlic butter. Then they bake for roughly 20 minutes, and are brushed with a touch more melted butter and freshly grated parmesan cheese. They truly are easy to make and don’t require much hands on time. These garlic knots are just as soft the next day, so you can make them in advance. Just warm them in the microwave for a few seconds before enjoying.
Here is what you will love about these garlic knots

FAQ
- Can I use active dry yeast instead of instant yeast? This recipe uses instant yeast which means it does not need time to activate like active dry yeast. You can simply add the yeast in with the other ingredients and mix the dough right away. If you only have active dry yeast on hand, you can substitute an equal amount. Just add the yeast to the warm water, whisk to combine and allow to sit for 5-10 minutes or until the surface gets frothy. This allows the yeast to activate and be ready to use and make your bread rise.
- Can I use all-purpose flour to make these garlic knots? You can use either all-purpose or bread flour for these. Bread flour results in a chewier texture, but the rolls are pillowy soft with either flour you use.
- Can I freeze these rolls and make them ahead? You can freeze these rolls after they are baked or right before baking. If you freeze the dough, freeze the dough right after shaping them into balls, then place in a zip-top bag. The day you plan to bake the rolls, allow them to thaw/rise for 4-5 hours at room temperature then bake the rolls. You can freeze the dough balls or the freshly baked rolls for up to 3 months in a freezer safe bag.

Description
These homemade Garlic Knots are pillowy soft and are bursting with delicious buttery garlic flavor. These rolls only require one 60 minute rise before being shaped into garlic knots and brushed with a buttery garlic herb butter. The garlic knots bake until light golden brown, then are brushed with more melted butter and freshly grated parmesan cheese. Enjoy these warm with your favorite cozy meal.
Ingredients
Dough
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
- 1 tablespoon honey or granulated sugar
- 1 cup warm water, warmed to 110F
- 3 cups bread flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Garlic Topping
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon parsley
- 1/4 teaspoon oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
After Baking
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- Dried parsley
- Freshly grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, add the yeast, honey (or granulated sugar), warm water, bread flour, salt, garlic and onion powder, olive oil and softened butter. Knead for 5 minutes.
Transfer dough to a lightly greased bowl. Spray top of dough with nonstick cooking spray. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
2. Punch the dough down and transfer to a very lightly floured surface. Divide into 12 roughly equal pieces of dough.
3. Preheat the oven. Preheat the oven to 375F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.
4. Shape the garlic knots. Working with one piece at a time, roll into a 12-inch long rope. Tie into a knot (cross the two ends, then tuck one end, pointing up and one end pointing down). Place on prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining pieces of dough.
5. Make the garlic butter. In a small bowl, add melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, oregano and Italian seasoning. Stir to combine.
6. Add the garlic butter and bake. Brush the garlic butter over the rolls. Bake in preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until the rolls are lightly golden brown.
7. When the rolls are done baking, brush melted butter over rolls, then add freshly grated parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of parsley. Serve warm and enjoy!
