Ingredients

Units Scale

Sauce

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 14ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 14ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1 14ounce can, diced tomatoes

Cheese Layer

  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese

Ravioli

  • 24 ounces fresh or frozen cheese ravioli

Top layer

  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded

Instructions

1. Make the sauce. In a large pot, add the ground beef and cook, stirring frequently over medium heat until browned and mostly cooked through.

Add in the onions and garlic. You do not need to drain the grease, unless there is a lot of it. The onions and garlic cook in the beef fat, which gives the dish extra flavor. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring frequently to soften the onion and bring out the flavor in the garlic.

Add in the tomato paste and stir to combine, then add in the parsley, basil, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Stir to combine.

Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover the sauce partially and allow to simmer for 30 to 60 minutes, stirring every 10 to 15 minutes to prevent the sauce from sticking to the bottom of the pot. The longer you let it cook, the more flavor the sauce will have.

2. While the sauce cooks, make the cheese layer. In a large bowl, stir together the ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese and mozzarella cheese.

3. Assemble. In a 9×13 inch, deep casserole dish, add a layer of sauce, then ravioli, then cheese. Repeat witih sauce, ravioli and cheese. Cover the top with sauce, then sprinkle shredded mozzarella and provolone cheese on top.

4. Cover with aluminum foil, then bake 30 minutes in a 350F preheated oven. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes, uncovered. Serve and enjoy!
